Taraxacum Officinale

Taraxacum Officinale also called is Kanphool or Dandelion, is used in the alternative medicine for the management of several diseases. It can be used to obtain relief from the symptoms of kidney and bone disorders. It is also used for treating warts and acne. The use of this medication has been found to be beneficial for the patients suffering from diabetes.


Taraxacum has a high medicinal value. It can improve the functions of the kidneys by acting as a diuretic. It increases the secretion of urine. It is also used as a detoxifier to ensure the elimination of toxins from the body through urination.

Taraxacum also acts a purgative. The hepatoprotective properties of this plant help in the treatment and prevention of liver disorders. It also acts as a mild laxative. This herb can also be used to improve digestion and increase appetite. Taraxacum is useful for treating skin problems such as warts and acne.


Taraxacum Officinale possesses strong medicinal properties and several essential nutrients. It is rich in iron, magnesium, sodium, calcium, potassium as well as vitamin C. It also contains a high amount of proteins, and carbohydrates.

A crystalline substance, taraxacerin, presents in Taraxacum produces a favorable effect on the overall functioning of the organs. It contains other chemical compounds including phytosterols, taraxasterol, and humotaraxasterol.

Taraxacum can be used in a dose of 9 to 12 grams per day. The use of this herb continuously for more than 6 weeks should be avoided.

Bone and joint disorders

Taraxacum is rich in calcium, which is needed for the growth and development of bones. A regular use of this herb can make the bones stronger and less porous. It can increase the bone mineral density and prevent the risk of osteoporosis induced fractures.

Controls diabetes

Taraxacum can be used to control blood sugar levels in diabetic patients. It works by stimulating the secretion of insulin in the pancreas. The diuretic nature of this herb results in an increased urination in the diabetic patients. This action helps to eliminate the excess sugar from the body. Taraxacum is also used to prevent the complications of diabetes affecting the kidneys such as diabetic nephropathy. (3)

Taraxacum produces a diuretic action. It can support the elimination of the deposits of toxins in the kidneys and urinary tract. Taraxacum may cause a few side effects when used by the patients suffering from gall bladder disorders that cause obstruction of the bile duct such as gall bladder stone.

The strong diuretic effect of this herb may affect the health of the fetus when used by a pregnant woman. Hence, its use should be avoided during pregnancy.

Taraxacum can increase the blood sugar-lowering effects of the anti-diabetic drug and cause severe hypoglycemia. Hence, patients using any medicines for diabetes should refrain from using Taraxacum.

Overdose Side Effects

When used in a higher dose, Taraxacum may cause skin rashes, loose motions, heartburn, and stomach discomfort.
