Mrigamadasava (Mrigamadasavam)

Mrigamadasava is an Ayurvedic medication used for the treatment of digestive disturbances like gastroenteritis. The prime ingredient in this medicine is Mrigamada, which means musk. This medicine is in a liquid form and contains a high percentage of self-generated alcohol. Mrigamadasava is also known as Mrigamadasav and Mrigamadasavam.


The herbal ingredients used in this medicine are given below:

  • Mrita Sanjeevini Sura (A special type of wine)
  • Black Pepper
  • Kasturi (Mrigamada or Musk)
  • Clove
  • Long Pepper
  • Nutmeg
  • Cinnamon

These ingredients are stored in a mud pot. The mouth of the pot is closed by a cloth smeared with clay for seven days. The contents are later filtered and collected in an air-tight container. Once prepared, it should be stored in a cool and dry place. It should preferably be stored in an amber-colored bottle to protect from light.

This unique method of preparation ensures the contents are unaltered for a period of almost 10 years. This means the expiry date of this medication is 10 years from the date of manufacture.

This medicine can be used for the treatment of following conditions:

Intestinal Infections

Mrigamadasava is commonly used to get relief from the symptoms of intestinal infections and the symptoms caused by them such as pain in the abdomen, and loose motions. It controls loose motions by reducing the motility of the intestinal muscles. It can also be used to treat dysentery caused by parasitic infections. It also acts as an antibacterial agent and protects the digestive tract against the bacterial infections. It is effective against a range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It improves the digestion and helps in boosting the functions of the stomach and intestines.

It also strengthens the immunity of the person and prevents the tendency for recurrent digestive disturbances. It promotes healthy microbial flora of the intestines, which helps in enhancing the functions of the digestive tract such as breakdown and assimilation of food. This action of Mrigamadasava also helps to get rid of bloating and flatulence. This medicine also improves the functions of the liver, which plays an important role in the digestion of food.

It acts as a natural sedative and provides relief from pain in the abdomen. Though patients can also use painkillers and antispasmodic drugs to get rid of abdominal pain, it is advisable to use Mrigamadasava instead of those drugs as Mrigamadasava is superior to them in terms of effectivity and safety. Mrigamadasava not just relieves the pain but also tackles the underlying disorder. It works as a natural antispasmodic agent and prevents excessive contractions of the intestines, which are responsible for the pain, thereby relieving the symptoms as well as curing the underlying condition.


Mrigamadasava is effective in reducing fever caused due to bacterial and viral infections. It helps to relieve the symptoms associated with fever such as weakness, loss of appetite, and restlessness. It works by producing a strong antipyretic action. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and reduces body aches and headache.

Nervous system disorders

Mrigamadasava acts as an efficient nerve tonic. It strengthens the nerves and reduces the symptoms caused by facial paralysis and hemiplegia. It improves the ability of patients to perform movements, which have been affected due to the damage to the brain or nerves. It can also be used in the management of neuralgias.

How to use Mrigamadasava

The recommended dose of Mrigamadasava is 2 ml to be taken once or twice a day. The dose can be raised to 10 ml, twice a day if the results with the lower dose are not satisfactory. The doses should preferably be taken after meals to minimize gastric irritation. The medicine may be added with an equal quantity of water if the taste is not tolerable. It can be used for a period of 2 to 4 weeks.

Patients, who are using other medications, should keep a gap of half an hour between the intake of Mrigamadasava and the other medicines.

Side effects of Mrigamadasava

There are no known side effects of Mrigamadasava. This medicine is prepared from natural herbs and contains no chemicals. Hence, it is considered safe. When used in higher doses, it may cause a mild burning sensation in the stomach.

Since this medicine contains a high level of alcohol, it should never be taken in the higher than recommended doses. In higher doses, it can cause all the adverse effects of alcohol.

Also, it is not suitable for children and the people suffering from liver complaints. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not use this medicine.
