Hadjod (Cissus Quadrangularis) Benefits & Uses

Hadjod, also called Cissus Quadrangularis, is an ayurvedic medication primarily used for weight loss. It can be used to treat the metabolic dysfunctions. The use of this herb is beneficial for the patients suffering from bone disorders like fractures and osteoporosis. This herb possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and adaptogenic properties, which help in the treatment and prevention of several diseases.

Indication, uses, and benefits

The health benefits of this medicine are as follows:

Hadjod can be an effective aid for the patients trying to lose weight. Obesity is a common precursor to most health problems such as hypertension, high cholesterol, stroke, heart attack, and diabetes.

Obesity was initially considered a problem affecting only the population in the developed countries. However, the sharp rise in the obesity-related complications has been witnessed even in the developing and underdeveloped countries in the recent years.

Hence, there is a need for an effective treatment for obesity to help the patients lose weight and reduce the risk of complications. Cissus Quadrangularis has been found to be beneficial for weight loss and reducing central obesity.

It helps the obese patients to achieve and maintain the target weight. This benefit of Hadjod was proved during a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study involving 123 obese patients. The volunteers belonged to different genders and age groups.

The participants were administered two doses of the extract of this herb or placebo every day for 8 weeks. At the end of this period, a statistically significant reduction in the overall weight, as well as central obesity, was observed in the participants who were administered the Hadjod extract.

The use of this herb also had a favorable effect on the parameters such as blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, and C-reactive protein in these participants. These studies proved the usefulness of Hadjod for the obese individuals.

Cissus Quadrangularis can be used for improving the strength of the bones. It is commonly used for the repair or healing of the fractured bones. The therapeutic efficacy of this herb as an osteogenic agent has been proved in research. The study particularly focused on evaluating the effect of Hadjod on the healing process of maxillofacial fracture.

The fracture of the maxillofacial skeletal usually takes a longer time to heal compared to the fractures in other bones of the body. Several attempts were made to decrease this healing period of 6 to 8 weeks through an improved surgical technology or regulation of the physiological mechanisms of bone healing. However, these methods failed to produce the desired results.

However, it has been found that the use of Hadjod can reduce the healing period of the fractured bone considerably. During the study, the patients with maxillofacial fracture were treated by internal fixation method. The postoperative management involved the use of analgesics and antibiotics.

The participants were later divided into two groups. The first group of patients was administered C. Quadrangularis while no supplementation was provided to the patients in the second group.

The efficacy of the herb was proved on the basis of parameters such as pain, fragment mobility, swelling, and serum calcium that were evaluated pre-operatively and post-operatively at regular intervals.

The results of the study showed that the participants in the first group experienced less pain, fragment mobility, and swelling compared to those in the other group. Also, there was a rise in the serum calcium and phosphorus levels in these patients. The healing of the bones was faster in the patient in the first group thus reducing their recovery period.

Hence, it was concluded that C. Quadrangularis could be used in the management of fractures for reducing the symptoms and accelerating the healing of affected bones.

Hadjod is commonly used for the treatment and prevention of Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition caused due to the loss of bone mineral density resulting in the softening of the bone. It can make the bones brittle thereby increasing the risk of fractures.

Cissus Quadrangularis helps to treat this condition by increasing the osteoblasts and prompting the bone mineralization process. It reduces the bone resorption and assists in the bone formation.

It also makes the bones stronger by increasing the uptake of calcium, which is a key mineral required for the health of the bones. Calcium is needed for the healing of the broken bones and reducing the recovery period of the patients with fractures. A regular use of Hadjod can improve the bone mineral density thereby preventing osteoporosis. It can reduce the risk of osteoporosis-induced fractures by almost 40%.

Reduces cholesterol

Hadjod has been found to be beneficial in the management of hypercholesterolemia. It is particularly effective for the patients suffering from obesity due to the abnormalities in the lipid metabolism and oxidative stress.

This herb produces an adaptogenic effect and reduces oxidative stress. These actions are useful in reducing the cholesterol levels. This effect of Hadjod has been proved during research.

This study showed a reduction in the total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides in the participants. These changes were accompanied by an increase in the HDL-cholesterol levels.

Hence, the use of Hadjod is highly recommended for the patients having high cholesterol. It can help to regulate the lipid levels and reduce the risk of hypercholesterolemia complications such as atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.

Type 2 diabetes

The use of Cissus Quadrangularis is highly recommended for the patients suffering from type 2 diabetes. It works mainly by promoting weight loss. Since type 2 diabetes is strongly linked to obesity, even a slight reduction in weight can have an encouraging effect on the blood sugar levels.

Hadjod helps to control the blood sugar levels and prevents the diabetic complications such as cataract, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic nephropathy, and athlete’s foot.

Reduces pain and inflammation

Hadjod can be used for the management of acute and chronic painful disorders such as a headache, arthritis, and muscular problems. It has a rich content of vitamin C, which is an antioxidant. It has the potential to block the inflammatory processes in the body thereby reducing pain and swelling.

The pain-relieving action of Cissus Quadrangularis is comparable to those produced by the commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Aspirin and Ibuprofen. However, Hadjod is safer than these drugs as, unlike them, it does not cause any side effects.
