Chitrakasavam is an Ayurvedic medicine used in the treatment of several skin diseases. It is particularly useful for treating Leukoderma. This medicine contains pure natural herbs that have been used for centuries to prevent the acute exacerbations of this disease. The strong medicinal power of the herbs in this medicine also provides relief from the digestive disorders. This medicine contains about 5 to 10 percent of self-generated alcohol, which along with the water present in it, serves as a media to deliver the alcohol and water soluble active constituents of the herbs to the body.
The herbal components of this medication are given below:
- Gomutra or distilled cow urine
- Chitraka or Plumbago Zeylanica
- Trikatu, which includes Ginger, Pepper, and Long Pepper
- Kshaudra or Honey
To prepare this medication, the herbs are mixed in a container smeared with ghee and water is added. The container is closed and allowed to stay for the fermentation to take place. After about 15 days, the contents are checked to confirm whether the desired level of fermentation has taken place and then, the contents are filtered. The medicine prepared in this manner has a higher shelf life. It remains unaltered and can be used for 10 years from the date of manufacture.
Chitrakasavam Benefits & Uses
The health benefits of Chitrakasavam are given below:
Chitrakasavam is immensely beneficial in the management of Leukoderma. Leukoderma, also called vitiligo, is a chronic skin condition that is characterized by the appearance of white spots and patches on the skin. It occurs when the skin loses its pigmentation in some areas. As a result, white or de-pigmented patches appear on the skin that looks distinctly lighter than the normal skin color of the person.
The conventional treatments for Leukoderma involve the use of steroid creams and phototherapy, both of which fall short in controlling its symptoms and cause serious side effects when used for a long term. Contrary to this, Chitrakasavam helps to reduce the appearance of white patches to a great extent without causing any side effects. Since the chronic nature of Leukoderma necessitates taking treatment for a prolonged duration, Ayurvedic treatment with Chitrakasavam is considered a safe alternative for managing this disease.
Chitrakasavam helps to treat Leukoderma by tackling the factors that cause flaring up of its symptoms. Most people with Leukoderma develop the symptoms when exposed to a stressful situation or because of a chronic gastric disorder. It can also occur due to an impaired hepatic function. Chitrakasavam can help to prevent the exacerbation by reducing the mental stress. It calms the nerves and allows a person to feel relaxed and be stress-free. It also corrects the hepatic dysfunctions and restores the ability of the liver to detoxify the body thus reducing the risk of exacerbations of Leukoderma. Regular use of Chitrakasavam can result in the gradual disappearance of the abnormal patches on the skin.
Chitrakasavam has been found to correct the nutritional deficiencies and helps in treating anaemia. It has a favourable effect on the digestive tract and boosts its functions thus promoting the breakdown, absorption, and assimilation of food. This ensures that the nutrients consumed by a person are absorbed into the blood, which helps to prevent the deficiency of vitamins and minerals like iron.
Chitrakasavam is indicated in the treatment of piles and dropsy. It improves the digestion and prevents constipation, which is the major cause of piles. It reduces the symptoms of piles like blood in stools, pain while passing stools, and the protrusion of mass through the anus.
Side effects of Chitrakasavam
Chitrakasavam contains pure natural herbs. It is devoid of any chemical constituents. Hence, it does not cause any side effects. It is completely safe to use. However, patients must use it in the recommended doses only as a higher dose of this medicine can cause gastric upsets.
The effect of Chitrakasavam on the newborn baby or foetus is not known when a lactating or pregnant woman uses it. Hence, women should consult a doctor before using Chitrakasavam.
